moving. that's great. we had some drizzle, low clouds in place, the high and mid level clouds are gone. it's going to set the stage for a cool day, 60s on the temperatures, 50s for some. lower 60s by the concord pavilion, 61 berkeley, west at half moon bay, with a sea breeze breeze, 63 at monterey. l low has moved to the east and the south. we are starting to see our first indications of some cool fronts moving in. if you are in las vegas, you

are going to get thunderstorms. 60s and 70s on the temperatures later today. any idea on 580, when it mielt reopen. >> it's going to take a while. we have been on this since we started this morning. interstate 580 in the castro valley is a mess, lee joins frus the scene right now with more. >> reporter: thank you guys. caltrans said they will be out here for several hours, they are not giving us a time frame as to when they can get the road back open. we have two big rigs blocking the lanes of interstate 580 in castro valley. the number four lane is open, taking traffic to the off ramp the eden canyon rode but traffic is backed up for 4

miles, we have new information since we last saw you guys in the last hour, at 4:20, a black sedan clipped the first truck, that caused the first truck to stall in the number three lane, when it was stalled, the second truck crashed into the first truck, california highway patrol confirmed that this is a fatal accident, the driver of the second truck was killed. we also heard reports that there was a large amount of fluid on the highway and that hazmat teams were called out but california highway patrol said that was not the case but caltrans is coming out because the first truck was fully loaded and that truck needs to be cleaned out before they can tow the trucks, we have two tow trucks out here right now.

if you come back out here, you will see that the tow trucks are getting into pootion, it's going to be several hours -- position, it's going to be several house until it's reopened but they are moving all of the traffic off on the number four lane, going to eden canyon road. then you can recontact with the highway. but we have california highway patrol at the end of the off ramp directs the traffic. it's about a 4-mile back up from the foothill boulevard exit to here. if you are stuck in that traffic, it's best for you to get off of the foothill exit and take dublin canyon rode as an alternative route. thank you, lee, we are looking at the back up using our traffic maps, i want to show you how to get around it. we have a lot of slow traffic

coming up on the closure, if you want to use an alternative route, use 6080 and head that way to the east bay, the only good thing is that the traffic has not been one solid line, there is a bit of room in livermore but not much. if this is your commute, give yourself extra time. lets look at other commutes. highway 24 is busy through the lafayette area, the bay bridge is backed up before you make it on to the span. no problems on 880 and the south bay commute continues to be slow, is beginning to fill in, highway 17 is slow passing the reservoir because of an earlier crash, lets go back to the desk. conservative speaker ben shapiro is scheduled to speak

in 30 minutes. >> reporter: yes, we just got word from our pool that vice president mike pence's plane has just landed here in florida. the president and first lady are expected to come here and talk to first responders, that means national guard folks, we are going to get an update on how fema is helping with the recovery, they are also going to talk to folks who have been impacted by hurricane irma. then the president and vice president are going to naples to get more updates and talk with people whose homes have been destroyed by the storm. >> every time there is a presidential visit, it causes some disruption, what impact will the visit have. >> reporter: here on the

ground, it's okay. the white house would not take the president to a place where they would impede on where people are working, that's probably why they are coming to fort myers and naples. there are other areas like the keys that are very much this a recovery mode, dealing with withstanding water. fema said 25% of the homes in the florida keys are gone, the white house would not take the president someplace where they would be taking the first responders from their duties. in this area, they have a lot of volunteers and guards men. they have it handled. >> thank you, we were showing pictures of the vice president's plane, the president is expected in half

an hour. utility workers are working to get power back for millions of people effected by hurricane irma. florida power and light said hurricane irma caused the most widespread damage in the company's history. in some areas, it could take weeks, 21,000 workers are trying to restore power including bay area crews in florida. more than 100 members of the bay area national guard are back home after spending the last few weeks helping out victims of hurricane irma and hurricane harvey. they rescued people from flooded homes in houston and then went to help people in florida. they said it was gratifying to help others in their time of need. >> we do things so that others may live.

throughout your day. police are searching the area near highway 17 after shots were fired there last night. police were called with a report of an explosion, when officers arrived, the suspect took off and started to shoot. officers found him lying face down and arrested him. police are in the area making sure that nobody else was involved. the bodies of three children were found in an apartment in west sacramento last night. police responded to a domestic violence call last night. that's when they found the bodies of the children. the suspect was arrested just after midnight. he was married to the children's mother, police said she saw him kill her children and that she was a victim of domestic violence. there is no word on how the

children dies. >> it's a sad thing, not just for the family but for the police officers and firefighters, thtion reaching us, it's very difficult -- this is reach us, it's very difficult especially for the people on the scene. >> the names of the children and their ages have not been released. san francisco police officers made three arrests this connection with a shooting last month. the gun used was stolen from the police department. san francisco police say 18 year old eric garcia was booked for the homicide. he faces charges of robbery, burglary and conspiracy and homicide: the gun used in the shooting was the personal

weapon belonging to a san francisco police officer that was stolen from his car a few days before the killing, an internal investigation is underway into how the gun was stolen. 15 marines were injured, some with serious burns after their vehicle caught fire, they were taken to a burn center. the vehicle caught fire as the marines were conducting a training exercise, the cause of the fire is being investigated. lets go back to sal. lots of traffic, in particular, interstate 580 and that horrible crash. >> is been there since 4:00 this morning. we have traffic that is going to be completely stopped as they are trying to get the truck off the road. at one point they were letting cars go through but this was a deadly crash involving a couple of trucks and other cars on

580. it happened at 4:00 morning. they are not letting the cars on the friday exit right now so traffic is aat a stand still. i will show you where this is on the maps. if you are driving through the area, traffic is growing through pleasanton, some people are just going north bound on 680, others are using dublin canyon road. others are deciding not to go because of the slow traffic. highway 24 has been busy through the lafayette area, the bay bridge has been ordinary which is to say a 25 minute delay at the toll plaza. 880 is also doing well. the san mateo bridge is doing well. they have issued advisories for wind on the bridges. in the south bay, 101 and 17

are slow, 17 is slow because of earlier issues. 280 is getting slow out of downtown san jose, lets bring in steve with the forecast. all right. fog bank is in place, the high and mid level clouds and thunderstorms are gone, at least for now, a change is in the air. one last look at the rainfall from yesterday. santa rosa, downtown, i had many reports of .5 inches, that's impressive. that was close to what other cities in the area had. other areas to the south did not get a drop. that's how to worked yesterday. placerville, .25 inches, brept wood and antioch they got lightning and a bit of rain.

bay, you will see temperatures in the 50s in the water because there is a strong system coming in. it's going to be a cool pattern today. 39 in truckee, big time thunderstorms, they had a funnel cloyed yesterday afternoon. here's the first system coming in. you see the drier air coming in behind it. we get a north west breeze, that will help to clear out the low low cloud deck. here's las vegas and the thunderstorms that are firing up. 60s and 70s today. most locations are below average on the temperatures. out of the 90s and 100s, i do not see anything like that for a while. 70s in san jose, 60s on the

. welcome back to ktvu news, all of the news, weather and information you need to know throughout your day. good morning, i am dave clark, we are following huge traffic problems in the east bay, lets go to sal. >> it's not getting any better. they are letting a few cars through and occasionally they stop traffic n on 580 -- on 580 westbound. as you drive through, it's on the left lane, they are letting traffic get off the freeway and then get back on. this is inadequate and the back up is 10 miles long after this deadly crash that happened a couple of hours ago. almost three hours ago now, after the 4:00 hour, this is going to be there for a while.

you can see these trucks are still damaged. they are working to clear it. one of the things that i mention, other freeways have been taking the slack. this is 580 west bound. that's where the accident is but 680 has been slow heading the other way, some people with going to highway 24. this commute has been busier than normal on

tahoe area >> after the city and east bay mud determined that bacteria was caused by an irrigation well. the water has since been flushed and more tests have come back negative. 250 residents and 650 businesses businesses. we revisited some san francisco businesses whose owners said that a large homeless encampment has been causing them problems, the businesses are on alameda street and san bruno street.

they said things have gotten better thanks to an effort from the city's department of homelessness and housing, they added that homeless people are trying to inch their way back to the area. >> there is an improvement. the problem has not been solved. i am happy that there is been a response by the city but at the same time, there is a ton of crime that is happening here. >> the city said it managed to get 100 homeless campers out of this neighborhood and into safe housing. in san francisco, some people are saying that the tech companies are to blame for the homeless problem for raising real estate prices. they said companies like google and air bnb have donated to homesless cautions causes, the quests day, do you think that tech companies should share

between the a's and the red sox, the fans had a message, they lowered a sign denouncing racism during the fourth inning, it was for a few minutes before umpires asked for it to be removed. people in oakland are talking about the a's plan to build a new stadium near lake merritt off interstate 880. oakland mayor libby schaaf said she's glad to keep the team in town without spending public money but there are complaints about putting a stadium in a neighborhood with residents and businesses, some are saying that the gentrification in

oakland is already causing problems, they think that the new stadium will add to that. others say is a great location for the oakland a's. >> lets help get you out the door. if you are leaving from dublin or pleasanton, the issue on 580 is causing problems. >> the traffic on the freeway is moving very slowly, almost a stand still. this is 580 westbound near the dublin canyon, it's causing a causing delay, they are working on getting the vehicles cleared. one truck is imleetly damaged. the other one, i am not sure what happened to it but the coroner has left the scene and there is a lot of work to do to get the lanes open.

people are getting off the freeway and getting back on after eden canyon road. people have been struck in traffic for hours, let me show you 580 westbound. even though the back up does not look long, it's not moving, you could be here for hours, some people are using 680 or other side roads. you will find your favorite alternative routes are jammed. 24 has been busier. bay bridge toll plaza traffic is slow as well. lets go to the south bay commute. the san mateo bridge is busy. 17 had a big back up all morning long because of a crash taking away a right lane near the reservoir. less bring in steve with

. welcome back to ktvu news, all of the news, weather and information you need to know throughout your day. a nine month old pit bull dog recovering after surgery fooling a severe beating that is blamed on her owner. she was rescued by a good samaritan and was taken in by animal service, her owner beat her in his garage in hayward. both sides of the dog's jaw were broken and one of her teeth was knocked out and she was covered in bruises. >> if she were an older dog we would have put her down but she is so resilient. >> the defendant gave a statement to police, admitting

to all of this including the fact that he used not only his fist but a 6-foot wooden rod to beat the dog. >> the owner pled not guilty to charge of felony animal cruelty, his bail was set at $10,000. meanwhile, the dog is staying with a foster family as she recovers from surgery. the animal rescue is collecting donations to pay for the cost of the surgery. a woman accused of trying to kill her new born baby in redwood city in a mcdonalds is charged with murder. sarah lockner went to the bathroom several times during her shift at mcdonalds complaining of stomach pains,

accident, we have a live report coming up. plus we have more on the president's trip to florida as the death toll from that storm continues to rise, mornings on 2 mornings on 2 continues. >> this is ktvu fox news mornings on 2 mornings on 2. good morning. welcome back to mornings on 2 mornings on 2. it's thursday, september 14th. we will be talking to steve about the weather but first the traffic news. miles of backed up traffic because of a deadly crash, it's a developing story in the east bay, the crash involved two big rigs, we is on the dublin grade. what is happening there. >> reporter: we are seeing clean up efforts. they managed to get the two trucks disconducted from each other. we are seeing the clean up right now, another truck was pulled in coming up the offramp to get over here so caltrans could remove the freight from the first truck on to the new

truck that has just arrived. the number four lane is open but traffic is crawling. at this point they are moving all of the traffic toeden canyon road. they can reconnect with highway 580 but they have to get through this long crawl and traffic is backed up for miles at this time. this crash happened hours ago, both trucks are blocking the lanes in the castro valley causing a three hour delay for some drivers, this is a fatal accident, the driver of the second truck was killed. >> at 4:20, threefs a three vehicle cletion involving two big rigs and another black car that is on the shoulder. the black car may have clipped the front of the first big rig, causing the rig to lose it's

steering. it came to rest in the three lane, then the second big rig came along and unfortunately did not know that the vehicle was stopped and collided with the rear of it. >> reporter: the tow trucks have been on the scene, they pulled the two trucks off each other but complicating the clean up efforts is the fact that the first truck was fully loaded zoo caltrans had to come and help with the clean up efforts. california highway patrol and caltrans said this is going to be a long clean up process. they are not giving an estimated time until the highway is reopened. they said that your best bet is to take dublin canyon road, ice you are stuck here and you have to get off onedden canyon off ramp and get back to the road

that way. >> for viewers wonderings how long the back up, it's going to livermore, that's 10 to 15 miles of traffic that is barely moving. 680 is slow as people are leaving 580, with good reason, the does not is where i put the arrow, is been there for four hours. as you drive through the dublin interchange, you are going to be at a stand still. i do not recommend it. only the exit lane is open. they are taking traffic off the freeway. we are also looking at the pin nens la. we had an earlier accident on 380 at 101, it's made a mess of 101 in both directions getting to the airport. if you are trying to catch a flight you need extra time in both directions, think about taking bart or using the city

streets if you know your way around. this is a good time to use the side roads. do not use the freeway, it's very slow in both directions. 280 is also slow heading down the peninsula because of traffic on 101. lets go to steve in the weather center. >> we have the thunderstorms gone. it was a good show yesterday. that low that was responsible for it is heading to las vegas, but the clouds are in place and so is the cooler air. north has dipped to a cool 50 degrees this morning. lake port, 51, that's the coolest you have been this a long time. after a long hot summer things are changing rapidly. las vegas has thunderstorms. we have a weak system coming into the north. there is plenty of low clouds.

some breaks, but a cool day, 50s and 60s on the temperatures. temperatures are below normal inland. 54 in bodega bay, novato and san rafael, 57, drizzle in the hills, a west wind here, west at 16 miles per hour. the combination of that and low clouds have made it to vacaville. we are cooler today. the system is sweeping in, it's going to chew up the fog a bit but the temperatures are low. happening now president donald trump is in florida meeting with first responders and people effected by hurricane irma. the president and first lady landed 15 minutes ago, mike and his wife are also there, lauren is live to bring us the latest.

>> reporter: you are right. we just saw president donald trump getting off air force one in fort myers. he was greeted by mike presence and marco rubio and the fema director brock long. they are getting a first hand look on how the federal recovery effort is going here in florida. the president and vice president and the first and second ladies are heading to naples next. they are going to meet with people who have been impacted by the storm and they are going to see how the first responders are handling the situation. >> the president is also talking about politics on the heels of his meeting with top democrats. some say they have a deal, others are saying that they do not. >> reporter: the president

caused some confusion between himself and two of the top democratic leaders on daca and the border wall. of course the two democrats coming out last night saying that they had reached a deal. there is no border wal. then the president tweeted that there was not a deal. he is trying to, some and the white -- and the white house is trying to clear up the confusion, the president said he believed that there were a lot of daca folks that are highly educated but at the same time he said we need border security. the white house is trying to kind of clear this up for everyone. the president and the democrats are saying they are trying to work towards some sort of resolution to this whole daca ordeal. >> as the day unfolds and the visit continues, all eyes are on the recovery efforts in

authorities who that person is. we know that the roadway is shut down at eden canyon road. drivers are doing their best to get around. sal has terpts. we have his report this a second. california highway patrol has not given us a time that they think that the road is going to be reopened. new this morning in the south bay, campbell police have one suspect in custody after a search overnight. police were called to a home after getting reports of a man prowling in the area, when officers arrived, the suspect took off and started to shoot. the california highway patrol closed the south bound lanes of how 17 for four hours while police tried to find the suspect. police remained in the area overnight looking for other

suspects but this morning they told us they have called off the search. san francisco police have arrested three people in connection with a deadly shooting last month. they said that the gun used in the homicide had been stolen from a san francisco police officer, the victim was found near 26th street on august 17th. san francisco police said eric garcia was arrested and book for the homicide. a 24 year old faces charges of burglary and robbery and conspiracy, another 18 year old is also facing charges of homicide along with other charges. police said the gun used in the shooting was the penl weapon of a san francisco police officer that was stolen stolen from his -- personal weapon of a san francisco police officer that was stolen from his car.

it's been there since 4:00 this morning. you can see the pictures from early in the morning, the coroner arrived on the scene to take away the person who died. some cars have been getting through on the exit lanes but that's inadequate. on the maps we have 15 miles of slow traffic and a lot of slow traffic this morning on 680 heading away from the scene, people are heard about it and they are getting on 680 and other local roads. that's made the morning commute difficult. 101 in very slow getting to the airport. if you are trying to catch a flight, get on the roads as early as you can. people hearing how bad 101 is have been on 280. we had a crash there and also slow traffic at the bay bridge

came out here, there was oil on the road and they were out there cleaning that up. they just left. another truck has arrived to take the freight from the first truck that has crashed. this was a fully loaded truck and they needed to get the freight loaded on to another truck, then they could move the vehicles off the road. the crash happened hours ago, both of the trucks were blocking the lanes of 580. this is a fatal accident, the driver of the second truck

this is a live picture on westbound 580. they are letting cars get through, instead of forcing cars off the freeway at the exit ramp, they are letting them go through one lane. one lane is open, it's better than nothing, this just happened moments before we went on the air, they have blocked the eden canyon road offramp and they are letting cars drive on one lane but it's quite a delay on the freeway as they continue to work on this deadly crash that happened in the 4:00 hour. we are here at 9:00, five hours in and traffic is very slow, this has had a big impact on the whole east bay commute. more people have been on the highway four this morning and 680 and 24. that has been putting pressure on other freeways, look north
